Times Tables.
Any tips on learning these quick time?
I am currently on a six week training course and then into a new job, I need to be pretty sharp on the maths.

1-5 X tables. If you can't learn those you are a fucking spastic.

6 and 7. The cunts. Just spend a couple of hours leaning them like a parrot. There is no other way at your age.

8 should be hard but isn't. It's the 10-2 X table (so 2X8= is 20-4. 30X8 is 30-6 etc.)

9 is like 8. It's the 10-1 X table with the added bonus of all the answers adding up to 9 so you can check (4X9 is 40-4=36 (3 +6=9))

You're born knowing the 10 and 11 times table.

Learn 12's like a parrot. Or learn it like the 10X 2X table. I don't give a shit.

I will need to know my 35x 11x 5x 17x and 8xs..
Obviously some easy ones.

Can you guess what job would require me to know these tables like the back of my hand?

Jammy,

what job is it? Wondering why you need to know 17s.

Re: Times Tables.
Look up long multiplication.

13 x 17 = 221.

Base number is 10.

Step 1 - 13 + 7 (or 17 + 3, doesn't matter which way round you do this) = 20
Step 2 - "Step 1" x 10 = 200. Do this because you are working to base 10.
Step 3 - 7 x 3 = 21
Step 4 = 200 + 21 = 221

Re: Times Tables.
Yes I know Surface, just add the two sums together, But I was looking for a quick way of remembering up to 20.

As I have a test Mon, it will be 5 mins with about 30 questions that will ask whats 17x19 ect.

Re: Times Tables.
You only really have to learn them up to ten mate. Think about it

Re: Times Tables.
Nope, 17..

17x1, 17x2 ect..

As I say, it gets tricky when you haven't used math for years and now i am expected to look at a board and quickly work out 17 x 13 ect..

You mean '7 and 8s' rather than 17 right?

Re: Times Tables.
In the sixties, we 5 and 6 years old learned our tables up to 12x as a sort of song, chanted in unison by the whole class and checked on by the teacher verballing quizzing us at the end of each session. We know every one by heart, even those of us who are a bit thick. The whole thing was done and dusted years before we were out of short trousers. My dad claimed that before WW2 the kids used to learn them up to 20x, but you can't trust your father.

I don't think they do anything of the sort nowadays.

Mind you, in them days, it were all green round here...
